Specialty Dog Training: Nurturing the Bond Between Humans and Dogs
Specialty Dog Training (SDT) was created to support one of the most incredible animals we are lucky enough to call family: dogs. Our founders, Graham and Kyrié Bloem, share a deep passion for helping those in need and nurturing the special bond between people and dogs. With a team of dedicated professionals, we train dogs to assist individuals in various capacities, including behavioral rehabilitation, service dogs and protection dogs.
Our Mission
At SDT, we believe in the profound impact that well-trained dogs can have on people’s lives. Our behavioral programs save lives, helping dogs that are scared, confused, misunderstood, abused, neglected, have genetic challenges or just have learned very poor behavior that is deeply impacting their lives at home and putting them at risk of being homeless or facing the sad reality of behavioral euthanasia.
We also raise and train service dogs who provide support for individuals with disabilities such as extreme anxiety, depression, PTSD, brain injury, epilepsy, and most mobility needs.
Additionally, we specialize in training and placing personal and family protection dogs for those needing increased safety and security due to traumatic experiences such as home invasions, assaults, burglaries, and domestic violence.
The Training Process
Training these elite dogs or rehabilitating client owned pet dogs is an extensive process that requires up to thousands of hours. Some dogs are selected based on specific genetic traits to ensure their capability, and all undergo comprehensive medical screenings costing thousands of dollars. Despite the significant expenses, our goal is to connect with individuals, understand their needs, and provide the necessary support.
Philanthropic Efforts
Recognizing the financial burden many face, and the cost of highly trained dogs, Graham and Kyrié Bloem founded the CA 501c nonprofit Shelter to Soldier, along side their good friend Krys Holc. This program trains and places highly trained rescue dogs as service animals at no charge to post-9/11 veterans. To date, over 100 service dogs have been donated through this program. The Bloem’s have personally donated over $2 million in the past 13 years, supporting the program through staffing, space, supplies, and direct funds.
Broader Community Support
Beyond Shelter to Soldier, the Bloems have supported numerous charities through Specialty Dog Training and their personal philanthropy, including Make a Wish, Lions Tigers & Bears, Rady Children’s Hospital, Magic 92.5 Jagger & Kristi’s Christmas Wish, Cancer Support Community, and many more. They have also funded dogs and training programs for clients in need when funds were not accessible.
Specialty Dog Training Grant Initiative
To continue their legacy of giving, the Bloem family has launched the Specialty Dog Training Grant Initiative. This program aims to assist individuals and families with the highest needs who face financial challenges. Grants will range from $1,000 to $10,000, providing support towards the purchase of a trained dog or assisting with a client owned dog.
How to Apply
If you are seeking a trained dog with special skills or you have a dog that is in serious need of intervention and behavior management, and are interested in applying for the grant, please fill out our questionnaire. Note that while we receive many inquiries, the criteria does involve a financial commitment from applicants. This grant provides partial coverage of costs, supporting those in need to achieve their goals.
At Specialty Dog Training, we are dedicated to making a positive impact through the training and placement of exceptional dogs and being there for voiceless dogs in need. With the support of our philanthropic initiatives, we strive to ensure that more individuals and families can experience the life-changing benefits of these incredible animals.
